Some Erie County buildings to be closed April 8 due to eclipse visitors impact

 

Erie, PA – – In anticipation of the significant impact of visitors and traffic expected in downtown Erie and the surrounding region due to the upcoming total solar eclipse event on April 8, several
County buildings and offices will be closed to the public on that day.

County Executive Brenton Davis announced that the following County buildings and offices will be affected:

Planning Department: CLOSED to the Public
Veteran Services: CLOSED to the Public
Health Department: CLOSED to the Public
Courthouse: CLOSED to the Public
Department of Human Services: CLOSED to the Public
Office of Children & Youth: CLOSED to the Public
Drug and Alcohol: CLOSED to the Public
MHID: CLOSED to the Public
Public Defenders Office: CLOSED to the Public

Employees in these buildings are expect to either work from a remote location or use their own accrued vacation or personal time. It is up to the department head to monitor remote work assignments.

All essential, public-facing operations will work a normal schedule. This includes:

  • Department of Public Safety
  • Department of Corrections
  • Edmund L. Thomas Center
  • The Blasco Library and branches

“As we prepare for the upcoming eclipse event and anticipate a large influx of visitors into Erie County, I want to remind everyone to enjoy the eclipse safely. This is a unique opportunity to witness a natural phenomenon, but it is important to be mindful of the potential impact on our community. We encourage everyone to plan ahead, follow safety guidelines, and be respectful of others as we all experience this event together,” said Davis

Additionally, the voter registration deadline has been extended by one day from April 8 to April 9. Voters can drop off their voter registration forms outside the Erie County Courthouse in the
ballot drop box, and staff members will ensure that your registration is processed.
