Erie, PA – The Erie County Public Library announces the return of its celebrated library comic-con as a virtual event May 8. LIBCON Erie celebrates comics as art, as literature, and as a part of pop culture. This event will bring together fans and creators for a jam-packed day of online panels, workshops, game tutorials, demonstrations and live programs. The program is free and offers events for all ages. To ensure the safety of our guests and staff, the program will be entirely virtual.

“The annual event has tripled in the number of activities, local vendors, artists and guests since the first library comic-con in 2016, and has evolved to include many fandoms and an overall celebration of geek culture and literacy in many forms,” said Tammy Blount, teen services librarian at Erie County Public Library. “As the 2020 event was cancelled, we are excited to return in 2021 with our new name – LIBCON Erie.”

Patrons are invited to compete in the cosplay and art contests. The art contest’s 2021 theme is to create an original character (superhero, pirate, monster, creature, alien, robot, etc.) in any of the accepted mediums. The art contest prizes are generously donated by Books Galore. The cosplay contest encourages patrons to dress up as their favorite open-genre character in purchased or made costumes. Awards will be honored by three age groups — adult, teen and youth.

Details on how to submit entries and full rules/regulations are available on the LIBCON Erie website. Registration is now open; submissions are due Tuesday, May 4.

The library is also seeking cosplayers to participate in the Cosplay Q&A event, where participants answer a set of questions as their preferred character. Video submissions to this event are due Wednesday, May 5.

Registration for select virtual workshops, including Dungeon Master Boot Camp, Pokemon BINGO!, Trivia Challenge, Fandom Fight Club and others, will open Saturday, April 24. All other events not requiring registration will be made available online the day of the event, Saturday, May 8. For more information, contact: Libcon@eriecountypa.gov.

Those interested in LIBCON Erie who are unfamiliar with the genre are invited to check out a graphic novel during April and participate in the Graphic Novel Reading Challenge. This challenge is open to all ages with prizes for different age groups.

LIBCON Erie is supported by the Friends of the Erie County Public Library.
